On February 13 members of the AWC Hamburg together with representatives from Coco-Mat, a recognized leader for natural sleep products, presented heart pillows for breast cancer patients to the Mammazentrum Hamburg in the Jerusalem Hospital. 100 pillows came directly from Coco-Mat and 32 were handmade by members of the Stitch N Bitch group of the AWCH.
The heart-shaped pillows are placed under the patient’s arm to ease the pain caused by surgery. The pillow’s design was developed by an American nurse in Copenhagen who is a member of the American Women’s Club of Denmark. One of the goals of the over 75 American Women’s Clubs found throughout the world is to be socially and charitably committed. The Heart Pillow Project has become an international charity movement; volunteers sew pillows for breast cancer survivors world-wide. Permission to use the pattern can be obtained from the owner at www.heartpillow.dk.
“Charity is a part of our American tradition” says Elizabeth Grass, a member of the AWC Hamburg. “The Heart Pillow Project lies close to our hearts, especially to us women.” This project is supported locally by the natural bed and furniture maker Coco-Mat, which has also worked with other American Women’s Clubs in other countries.
“We are glad that in working together with the AWC Hamburg we are able to make a key contribution in easing the pain of breast cancer patients and are looking forward to repeating our pillow event again in 2013”, says Konstanze Dammann, owner and manager of Coco-Mat. Prof. Dr. Eckhard Goepel of the Mammazentrum Hamburg in the Jerusalem Hospital: „The commitment of the ladies from the AWC Hamburg is exemplary and admirable. On behalf of all our patients I would like to thank them sincerely for their efforts.”
