October 2012 SPECIAL Bulletin
..............................
It looks like fall is among us.  The trees are starting to change colors, the temperature is crisp and the smell of endless possibilities are in the air.

I know that sounds like a greeting card but it's true.  There are a lot of things that October brings so this Special Update is coming to you to show you all of the ways you can get involved this fall.

Introducing MODERN ABOLITIONIST

If you have been following the team for a while, you may remember when my previous co-chair, Karen Lewis, and I were writing about a new website that I had been working on.  Well, the wait is now over! . . . almost.
I am SO excited to be able to announce that the site will be launchingNovember 3, 2012

Modern Abolitionist (www.modernabolitionist.org) will not only be up and running, but her birthday is going to be a memorable event.  The site will be launching with the first European screening of the documentary "Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide" at the Deutsches Filmmuseum!!!!! There will also be a panel discussion with esteemed speakers from the UN, ZONTA and a few other special guests.

Yes, I have been screaming for weeks and I am so excited to start this journey into abolishing the modern day slave trade.  If you are planning on being in Frankfurt at the time, please come to the screening, I would love to see you there.  For those who can't make it, I hope that you will visit the site and find ways in which you can get involved to make a difference in the lives of so many women and children around the world.

So head over to the site to sign up for updates and you can also follow on Twitter for important updates and news you can use!
I hope to see you there!

Show Some L-O-V-E for Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide

Yesterday was the beginning of the documentary airing on PBS.  Hopefully you were able to watch (or set your Tivo's) part one.  Don't forget that part two is airing tonight at 9 p.m. (please check your local listings at PBS).
So, you say you don't have access to PBS outside of the US and you can't make it to Frankfurt to see the documentary . . that's okay as you still have opportunities to be able to see this groundbreaking documentary.
If you are in the US you can organize your very own screening. For those of you outside of the states, you can pre-order your very own copy of the documentary at Amazon.  The official release is scheduled for some time in November, which will be a good thing to have for those of you holding 16 Days Campaign events as will have more than the book! Just remember to get the code for your DVD player to make it region free (or use your computer) as the DVD will only be in NTSC format for now.
While you are buying the DVD, why not buy the book as well?  If you already have a copy, think about giving a copy to someone else to get them inspired.  Sometimes, it is the small things that can make a huge difference.
For those of you (like me) who can't get enough of the Half the Sky Movement, did you get your song a day?  Thirty wonderful, beautiful and incredibly talented artists have donated a song a day to the Half the Sky movement which have been available for download trough September. There are only two songs and two days left so go grab your music here.

If you haven't been able to grab your songs (or you missed one or two) no worries, you can download them from iTunes.  Just look for Half the Sky Movement and download all of the songs that the artists donated for this cause.

Join the movement and support the cause.  The more people who know, the more we will turn oppression into opportunity!

FAWCO Clubs Take Action in 16 Days Campaign

We cannot be more thrilled by the tremendous support you all have shown as we get geared up for the 16 Days Campaign to end gender violence.  There will be quite a few different events that our members have organized going on around the globe.

Here is a list of what is going on so, if you are in the area, mark your calendar and show some support!

ANCOR Gets Involved!

Women hold up half the sky. Chinese proverb

And yet... one million children are forced into prostitution every year; three million women are sold as sex slaves; more women are likely to be maimed or killed by male violence than by cancer, malaria, traffic accidents and war combined...Does that mean that the sky is falling?

I am very excited to announce that ANCOR is formally participating in the FAWCO 16 Days Campaign to raise awareness and end violence against women. ANCOR will sponsor an evening meeting to discuss the issue of Forced Prostitution - the absence of choice. We will watch videos from advocates for change and Amiyah's Story, a tragic tale that confronts perceptions about prostitution and exposes facts about sex trafficking.

We will review a summary from the book (Half the Sky) that compares legalized prostitution in Amsterdam with other countries where sexual slavery has become a form of economic necessity due to lack of employment options, drug addiction, coercion by family, etc.

Finally, we will tour the website to learn more about the numerous options to be part of this movement and how to help hold up our half of the sky.

Here are the details you need to know to take concrete steps to fight the above issues and empower women. Change is possible, and you can be part of the solution.

Women Supporting Women

On October 11, 2012, come join us for an evening of Women Supporting Women who have been victims of domestic violence.  Women artisans, both expat and Italian will come together for a show and sale with 10% of the proceeds going towards a public awareness campaign through Artemisia; an organization that has been helping women and children who have been victims of domestic violence since 1991.

Last year they helped over 1200 women rebuild their lives, yet their funding has been cut back by almost 34%.  They need our support so that they can keep helping women to dare to dream of a better life for themselves and their children.

Please bring your partners and friends to this very special aperitivo as 30% of the 10 euro fee will go directly to Artemisia.  View our flyerand please feel free to share it with your email contacts and Facebook friends.    Casa della Creativita

The International Day of Non-Violence has strong connections with the works, beliefs, and methods of peace leader Mahatma Gandhi, who is known as India's "Father of the Nation".
