Since 2019, the UN has recognized January 24 as the International Day of Education, a date to celebrate education and reflect on the importance of learning for development and peace.
According to UNESCO’s statistical data, over 250 million children are not receiving any kind of schooling. The bitter reality is that there are countless societies around the world today where education is dismissed as unnecessary – especially for girls.
How can that be?
Here are some of the questions FAWCO’s education team members have about this situation:
- Could education and skills training reduce the risk of people returning to conflict?
- Would early childhood development interventions have a positive impact on peace?
- What impact will COVID-19 have on world peace in the long term, given that the negative effects on educational standards have already had a significant impact on the development of all children after just two years?
- Can we develop a peace-promoting school curriculum?
- As humans, we must cling to hope for peace in the world. How can we all keep learning how to share this planet with everyone else in a peaceful and equitable manner while growing up with pre-conceived ideas of how we need to behave to keep the world at peace?
