This June, the Education Team is thrilled to announce the next book in the Global Issues Book Discussion series: The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, by William Kamkwamba. This book showcases the importance of education and literacy as well as libraries. William tells the story of how he studied books in the school library and then cobbled together from spare items an electrical system for his home and then a windmill to pump water. We’ve chosen this book in partnership with the Environment Team because of its discussion of environmental issues, including a devastating drought in Malawi. The book is available in adult and young adult versions as well as a picture book, so the whole family can read together. In addition, there is a film docudrama called William and the Windmill.
Some of you may already have read this book as part of the summer read five years ago, before we started having virtual Global Issues book discussions. We hope you will reread it with a new focus on the importance of literacy and libraries as well as the environment. If you’re not rereading, then you’re still a step ahead and already prepared to join us for the discussion. If you haven’t yet read the book, you’re in for an interesting and inspiring adventure.
Our discussion will take place on World Literacy Day, September 8, at 7pm CET.
We hope you enjoy reading and join our discussion in September!
